Advent Calendar, Super Condensed Weekend Edition

December 6th & 7th
Over the weekend, I helped out two members of my family with separate yet similar tasks. On Saturday, I helped my mom set up some of the Christmas decorations, including a plastic tree with a warped base. Apparently, leaving plastic parts in a box in the roof during the insanely hot Arizona summer is not good. Fortunately, some creative microwaving of the plastic and hammering got the job done.

On Sunday, I helped hang blinds in my sister's new house. I am sure she greatly appreciated the effort. The weather yesterday was greatly fitting of a late fall day, as it was cloudy and cool. And in Arizona, cloudy days are much revered!

I assumed Arizona clouds had long since gone extinct. Or have you imported some from northern California?

Also, I saw a little something on CNN the other day about an Arizona sheriff who claims to be the "toughest sheriff in the country". I seem to remember you mentioning something about that and wondered if you could shed some light as to why he was on CNN.

Well I have no idea why he is on CNN, other than to possibly stroke his own ego. Basically, Joe Arpaio, Sheriff of Maricopa County, claims to be the toughest sheriff in the country because he appeals to outmoded throwbacks of the olden wild, wild west days, such as utilizing chain gangs, making inmates wear pink underwear and striped convict suits, and leaving "vacancy" signs on the tent jails throughout the area. He performs a lot of headline-grabbing stunts to maintain this image as a no-nonsense character, but it is still unknown if his techniques are actually effective at solving the crime issues that plague our semi-great county, such as illegal immigration and human smuggling.

Disregarding the fact that the office of county sheriff is pretty redundant in a highly urbanized county with several individual municipal police forces covering a hefty majority of the population, I don't really think Joe Arpaio takes actual, real law enforcement too seriously and just likes to perform mainly media-savvy public relations stunts to win public favor. However, the other voters of the county disagree with me and think he's doing a bang-up job, as he was re-elected in this past election. Oh well...
